Marco Polo got into the act when he brought back from the Orient a recipe for making water ices, which the Asians had enjoyed for thousands of years. Some 300 years ago, along came Charles the First of England, who was so delighted with his cook's cool concoction featuring a frozen cream ice desert that he pensioned him with 500 pounds a year to restrict the recipe to the royal table. (See ...our fountain fizzicians have great futures!) Today, of course, that delicious delicacy known as "ice cream" has spread to the four corners of the world. Leave it to Nero to come up with a hot item from a cool confection! ICE CREAM CONE BECOMES FAIR FAVORITE A surprise hit of the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 was an interesting and edible container of ice cream. Strangely enough, this incredible idea was called the "ice cream cone." This tasty treat has proved popular with youngsters and oldsters alike to this very day ... as many as 2,500,000,000 are sold every year! BUSINESS BOOM SEES SODA SUCCESS A man by the name of John Matthews introduced carbonated water to the citizenry in 1833. Syrups were added a few years later by a Frenchman and, in 1874, a conces sionaire who ran out of flavoring for his soda water during the noon rush served it with a scoop of ice cream and the ice cream soda was born. Some years later, prohibitionists in Evanston, Illinois declared soda water intoxicating and decided sodas could not be served on Sunday. An ingenious drug store operator located a legal loophole allowing perpetuation of his profits... he simply served ice cream and syrup, leaving out the soda water, and the "Sunday" was invented! The spelling was later changed when town fathers objected... and that's how a soda became a Sundae. (If your Sundae hasn't arrived yet, keep reading.) FORGOTTEN FRUIT DRINK PRECLUDES EPSICLE Only 30-odd years ago a California concessionaire was visiting friends in New Jersey on a cold winter's night. He happened to leave a glass of lemonade with a spoon in it on the window sill until the next morning, when he discovered it was frozen solid. Epperson held the frozen glass by the spoon handle under a water faucet until the molded lemonade slipped out of its container still in solid form ...he promptly named his delightful discovery the "Epsicle!" (Rumor has it the name change came about after Epperson's first child started calling him "Pop"!) AMERICAS FOUNDERS FAVOR FROZEN DELIGHTS Records show that ice cream came to America as early as 1700. A caterer named Phillip Physic (no phoolingJ announced in a New York newspaper then that he was equipped to keep the colonists cool with countless delicious dishes... including the coolest treat of all, ice cream! President George Washington himself was known as a man of discriminating tastes, and pewter ice cream pots and ice cream making machines could be found in his Mt. Vernon home. Dolly Madison, it's said, was the first to introduce the delectable dish to the White House. By now, ice cream was as American as apple pie! A SAD STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING Once upon a time there was good, clean fun. Families enjoyed it together. Boys and girls shared it on dates. People thought life was grand. Of course, that was a long time ago ...back in the days when there were more soda fountains than bars in New York City! When prohibition came in, saloons went out and so did their tasty food combinations. Ice cream parlors soon started serving food and became even more popular as Parlour Restaurants. Good clean fun was even funner! But alas, with the end of prohibition food went back to the cocktail restaurants and ice cream went to the drug stores and later, supermarkets. Sad to say, the good old Family Parlour Restaurant faded away. Good clean fun (sob) had no place to go. Now for the happy ending. One year not so long ago a happy fellow named Bob Farrell, who even looked like he belonged in those happy days of yore, brought the good old Ice Cream Parlour Restaurant back! He really did, with an unbeatable formula of fabulous food 'n fantastic fountain fantasies for frolicking fun-filled festive families! Now families are together again! Boys are dating girls again! People think life is grand again... and it is! Hurrah for good clean fun... and no better way to enjoy it than a party at FARRELL'S!
