Coco Palms Legend of the Sleeping Giant The Coca Palms is situated in the shadow of The Sleeping Giant of Nounou Mountain, in Wailua, Island of Kauai. Long ago in Wailua, on the island of Kauai, there lived a fishermen and his wife. One day he threw his net and, when he pulled it in, he found a fish that was larger than any he had ever caught before. As the man looked and wondered he was surprised to see two great tears roll from the fish's eyes! Suddenly the fish began to cry! The poor fisherman rubbed his eyes who had ever heard of a fish crying? So the fisherman carried the crying fish home to hiswife. By this time the fish was crying loudly and all the people of the village followed the man home. See, it is an Akua (god)," cried the people. "We must all be very kind to it." "It is hungry, poor thing!" exclaimed the fisherman's wife. "Here's a bit of sweet potato and some dried fish." The fish was indeed hungry, It ate all the sweet potato but refused to eat the dried fish. "Perhaps it would rather have poi," I suggested a man standing near. "Give it poi! Give the hungry Akua poi! shouted the people. Poi was brought and the fish stop ped crying long enough to eat all the poi in the bowl. Then he be gan to cry again. The people brought more poi and the fish ate it all! When there was no more in the village, the fish lay down and went to sleep. Suddenly the sleeping fish began to change! First ... the tail shrank away and two feet qrew where the tail had been! Then two fat legs came into sight. From the fins came two arms and great enormous hands. The head slowly became that of a young man and, as the last scale dropped away. there, before the people of Wailua, lay a young giant! Even as they watched he seemed to stretch and grow bigger and bigger! The more he ate, the larger he became. So Kahuna-nui (wise man) was called from the other side of the island. "Have you tried to sing to him?" asked the Kahuna-nui. "The answer to all your troubles lies in a song. I cannot tell you the song which willl end the troubles." For many days the people fed the giant poi and sang to him ... many were the singers and many were the songs of old and new. Among the singers there was a little girl, Pua-nani, who had the sweetest voice of all. One evening, when the giant had been hungrier than usual and demanded more songs, Pua-nani kept looking at the rocks and small stones on the ground. Before she knew what was happening, she found herself singing a song. It was all about a giant who turned into sfone. And as she sang, the strangest thing happened! The giant slowly turned into stone! To this day he sleeps on the mountain side of Wailua. Maybe he will sleep there forever, or maybe he will awaken when some little girl sings a song of waking up!
