Posters representing Hawaii always highlight the miles and miles of deserted white sand, clear, warm waters and scenic surroundings. Many visitors are pleasantly surprised at their first step into Waikiki, since to many the tempera ture is almost as comfortable as their bath or shower water at home. Although Waikiki is the most popular beach for visitors, Oahu boasts other spots around the island which offer waves for bodysurfing, coral reefs for snorkeling, barbecue areas for picknicking and de serted sandy beaches for just sunbathing. One of Oahu's most popular beaches is Hanauma Bay, a 30-minute drive from Waikiki. Hanauma has been named a marine preserve so fishing and re moval of sea life are strictly prohibited. This regulation has made the bay an ideal spot for snorkeling in calm, fish-filled waters. Picnic tables and restrooms are available, so it's a great place to spend the day. Past Hanauma Bay a few miles is Makapuu Beach, site of annual bodysurfing championships. This beautiful beach is great for sunbathing, but be wary of tricky currents and strong waves. The Windward side of Oahu has lots of nice beaches where visitors can stop and swim on their island tour, or just spend the day, picknicking and swimming and sunbathing. A few of these beaches are Kailua Beach Park, Kahana Bay Beach Park and Bellows Field Beach Park (a large military beach open on weekends and holidays). The North Shore beaches, which are so widely publicized because of their excellent surf condi tions, are generally taboo for swimmers, especially during the winter when the waves can reach up to 30 feet. Sunset Beach, site of championship surf meets, has a strong current. Waimea Bay has tricky currents too but during the summer is usually safe if you swim close to shore, Pupukea Beach Park is a lovely spot for sunbathing and picknicking, but a jagged coral shelf makes swimming dangerous. -Waikiki Beach Press When the Ship Rolls the Doors May Close...
