Seafood restaurants, curio shops, Wax Museum, Ripley's Believe It Or Not, boat tours of the Bay, sailing ship "Balclutha", etc. Golden Gate Park - World's largest artificial park, once consisting of only sand dunes. Stow Lake (rowboats, canoes), California Academy of Sciences containing exhibits dedicated to the works of man and nature, Con servatory of Flowers is a large glass building containing an outstanding collection of tropical plants, orchids, begonias, ferns, etc., De Young Museum is the largest museum in the city containing a collection of European and American art, Hall of Flowers is open only for special exhibits of flowers and plants, Japanese Tea Garden is a faithful replica of an Oriental garden, especially beautiful when the cherry trees are in bloom, fortune cookies and tea served, Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens are 60 acres of trees, shrubs, flowers from all over the world, Morrison Planetarium is where a special projector casts the stars and planets on a dome 65 feet in diameter, showing the spectacular drama of the universe, Steinhart Aquarium is a tremendous display of live fish in glass tanks, alligators, dolphins, etc. There are many more attractions in the park. Golden Gate Bridge - Known for its beauty. One of the world's longest single span bridges. Car observation areas on both sides of bridge. Car toll .50 round trip, pedestrians .10. Pedestrians may walk across span. San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge - World's longest bridge, 8 1/4 miles in length. Double decked. Car toll .50 round trip. No pedestrians. Alcatraz - The former Federal penitentiary located on San Francisco Bay. Site of the first lighthouse in California. Chinatown - The largest Chinese colony outside of China. Many Oriental shops, restaurants, etc. Grant Ave, is the main street of this section. Cable Cars- Invented in San Francisco in 1873. Now a National Monument. Three lines are still operating; Powell Street to Fisherman's Wharf, Powell - Hyde Sts, line to Aquatic Park, and on lower California St. Cable Car Barn - Open to the public. See how the Cable Cars operate. Washington and Mason Sts. S. F. Zoo, Fleishhacker Pool, Storyland, and Playground - A tremendous zoo resembling the natural habitat of the animals. The world's largest swimming pool. A storyland and playground for children. Ghirardelli Square- The original buildings are from the old Ghirardelli Chocolate Co. Interesting historical architecture. Many shops, restaurants, nite club, museum, etc. The Cannery - Restored complex from the old Del Monte Fruit Packing Plant. Art galleries, restaurants, gourmet markets, shops, etc. Japanese Cultural and Trade Center- New $15 million complex containing shops, restaurants, etc. Aquatic Park - Sand beaches, green lawns, located at the foot of Polk St. Maritime Museum containing models of historic ships, artifacts, photographs, etc. San Francisco Maritime State Historic Park - Foot of Hyde St, next to Aquatic Park. Old wooden vessels restored to operating condition. A three masted schooner, side-wheeler ferryboat, a two masted flat bottom boat, etc. Union Square - A square block of formal gardens set in the heart of the downtown shopping area. Located on top of a four story underground garage. Geary and Stockton Sts. Ferry Building - A famous San Francisco landmark. Containing a 235 foot clock tower. This building withstood the 1906 fire and earthquake. On the second floor is a museum with over 10,000 mineral specimens. Union Street - The section starting west of Van Ness Ave. is an interesting street. At the corner of Union and Gough Sts, is the Octagon House, an 8 sided building constructed in 1861. Open to the public the first Sunday and second and fourth Thursdays of the month during the hours of 1:00-4:00 p.m. This section is also interest ing for its antique, book, flower, and gift shops. Also contains art galleries and restaurants. Cost Plus - A group of buildings housing wares of all descriptions from around the world, furniture, cookware, glass, jewelry, clothing, liquors, brass and wrought iron products, nursery plants, arts and antiques, etc. Everything at bargain prices. just like taking a trip around the world. Free parking. Open 7 days a week and 6 evenings, Mon, thru Sat. Located on Taylor St. between Bay and North Point Sts, at Fisherman's Wharf. North Beach Area - Vicinity of Broadway and Columbus Sts. This area consists of nite clubs, topless clubs, shops, restaurants, art galleries, etc. A jumping section of town, especially Friday and Saturday nights. Playland at the Beach - An area consisting of sandy beaches on the Pacific Ocean. Containing many amusement rides, gaming concessions, restaurants, etc. Cliff House and Seal Rocks - A San Francisco landmark. Beautiful view of the Ocean and Seal Rocks containing seals at various times of the year. Restaurant, curio shop, etc. Twin Peaks - A magnificent view of the city from these two peaks. On a clear night, it is breathtaking. Crookedest Street in the World - One block in length on Lombard St, between Hyde and Leavenworth Sts. Palace of Arts and Sciences - The restored remnant of the Panama - Pacific Exposition of 1915. Recently recon structed. A beautiful building with attractive landscaping. On Lyon St. near Marina Blvd. Contains the "Exploratorium", a new museum designed for hearing, seeing, touching, and exploring exhibits in the fields of human perception, science, etc. Palace of the Legion of Honor - A museum located in Lincoln Park. Beautiful view of the Golden Gate and the Golden Gate Bridge. Contains 20 galleries and two garden courts. Collections of paintings, tapestries, etc. Coit Tower - A beautiful concrete column of a building 542 feet above the waters of San Francisco Bay. Marvelous view of the Bay Area. Its walls are decorated with murals. An elevator may be taken to the top of the column. The tower is open from 11:00 a. m, to 4:30 p.m., but the view is always open. Enter from Lombard St. only. Civic Center - A complex of nine public buildings. The huge central plaza is over a three story parking garage and Brooks Hall, a huge exhibit area. The other buildings consist of City Hall, Civic Auditorium, Main Public Library, Opera House, Veteran War Memorial Building, State Building, and Health Center. The San Francisco Museum of Art occupies the fourth floor of the Veterans Memorial Building. Contains paintings, sculpture, photography, and graphic arts. Open Tuesday thru Friday 10 a.m. - 10 p. m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p. m., Sunday 1 - 5 p.m. There is a separate entrance on McAllister St, near Van Ness Ave. Admission free. (OVER)
