"Images of beaches, surfing, and gently waving palms rarely evoke thoughts of growling engines or the smell of burning rubber. Travel brochures notwithstanding, generations of vibrant racing communities having flourished in Hawaii since the arrival of the first automobiles and motorcycles at the turn of the 20th century. While well-used race tracks can be found on Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Island, the only sanctioned venue on the most populous island of Oahu was shuttered in 2006 leaving many racers without an outlet for their passion. Some Oahu residents have turned to street racing; others have settled for displaying their cars through cruising and a few have taken their passion to the venues still active on the neighbor islands.
