It was fitting that in 1961, the year in which Space
was conquered by other countries, a British Shipping
Company should put to Sea - on which the
fortunes of the British Commonwealth of Nations
were founded - this latest and greatest example of
maritime ingenuity.

...fitting also that this newest link with the 
Commonwealth should bear the name CANBERRA,
the Australian Capital City, and that her Sponsor
should be Dame Pattie Menzies, G.B.E., the wife of
the Prime Minister of Australia at that time.

...fitting also that the maiden voyage of a regal
ship began on 2nd June, the anniversary of the
Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
CANBERRA is fitted with stabilizers and, like all
other ships of the fleet, is fully air-conditioned.
