Bamboo Ridge Press was founded in 1978 to publish literature fostering the appreciation, understanding and creation of literary, visual and performing arts by, for, and about Hawaiʻi’s people. It was published quarterly from 1978 to 1987, then as a single author book and a double issue book from 1987 to 1996, and then two issues per year from 1996.
Presently the two volumes published every year include a book of poetry or fiction by a single author and an anthology featuring work by both emerging and established writers. Over these 40 years 1,000 unique authors have found a place for their voice.
While special attention is given to literature that reflects local sensibility, Bamboo Ridge is broad in scope and embraces a variety of work from writers across the nation. Some of our books have received recognition for literary excellence and for their contribution to the understanding and appreciation of Hawaiʻi's cultures and people. Bamboo Ridge publications have been adopted as texts or recommended reading in high school and college classrooms and have found a diverse audience across the country.
You will find here out-of-print and nearly out-of-print issues dating from 1978. New issues can be purchased from the Bamboo Ridge website.
This project was made possible through the generous support of the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities (HCH).
Bamboo Ridge Press has worked to secure permission to upload these issues in this online library from its artists and authors. If you wish to enquire about the inclusion of your work in this collection and/or request removal, please contact
