dc.description.abstract | Kapiʻolani Community College is the only campus in the University of Hawaiʻi system that is named after a person, not a place. As the wife of King David Kalākaua (r. 1874-1891), Queen Kapiʻolani lived at ʻIolani Palace, used her status and connections to help those in need, and travelled to London in 1887 to represent the Hawaiian Kingdom at Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. She established the Kapiʻolani Home for Girls (1885) whose parents had leprosy and the Kapiʻolani Maternity Home (1890) to care for mothers and babies. As a campus, KCC draws inspiration from the life of this noble, yet very humble, woman. | |
