Abstract
Description
This interview, conducted by students in Professor Kim Compoc’s Fall 2024 Humanities 300 course at the University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu, features Kawena Komeiji, the Hawaiian Pacific Resources Librarian. Komeiji discusses her background in Hawaiian language newspapers, her commitment to aloha ʻāina, and her role in advancing research and knowledge accessibility for Native Hawaiian communities. She reflects on the historical role of libraries, archives, and museums in colonialism and imperialism and emphasizes the importance of decolonizing knowledge systems. The conversation also explores the Aloha ‘Āina LibGuide, UHWO’s library exhibit on environmental and political activism, and the need for institutions to acknowledge and address historical injustices.
