Dive into the history of Oahu's plantation life on the Ewa Plain with the digital archival collection of the Ewa Hurri-Cane newsletter. Published by the Ewa Plantation Company, this newsletter first made its appearance in 1949, chronicling the daily lives of plantation workers and their families through to 1970. The issues captured many aspects of the plantation community life, documenting current news relating to the company, such as plantation crop yields, promotions, and retirements of workers, as well as the more personal, such as deaths, weddings, births, and sporting events. Researchers interested in the Ewa Plantation Villages community may find insights into Hawaii's socio-economic fabric during this time period.
This collection spans two decades, from 1950 to 1970, and is not a complete collection with many missing issues still awaiting discovery. The issues we do have access to are thanks to the dedication of citizens within the Ewa Plantation Village and the Ewa Elementary School, who have helped to preserve these documents through the years. The newsletter completed its run in 1970, publishing its last issue on March 30th, when the Oahu Sugar Company purchased the Ewa Plantation Company, marking the closing of a significant chapter in the island's agricultural history.
